     Rev. Robert L. Hopkins
July 31 1920-September 19 2014

Funeral services for Reverend Robert L. Hopkins, age 94 of Bloomfield, Nebraska, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 24, 2014, at Christ Memorial United Methodist Church in Bloomfield. Reverend Trudy Hanke will officiate, with burial in the Bloomfield City Cemetery. Military Honors will be conducted by VFW Post #4996 and American Legion Post 249, both of Bloomfield, and the Nebraska Army National Guard Honor Team. Visitation will be Tuesday, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at Christ Memorial United Methodist Church in Bloomfield. Brockhaus Funeral Home of Bloomfield is in charge of arrangements.

Reverend Hopkins died Friday, September 19, 2014, at the Norfolk Veterans Home in Norfolk, Nebraska. Reverend Robert Leroy Hopkins, son of Alex and Nellie Agnes (Emery) Hopkins, was born July 31, 1920, in Ottawa, Kansas. Bob grew up in Lawrence, Kansas, and later married Virginia Marie Trovillion. Bob and Virginia had known each other as neighbors before Virginia had started kindergarten. After their marriage, the couple lived in Kansas until November of1968, when Bob transferred his Pastoral Membership to the Nebraska United Methodist Conference. As Bob would always say of his life: “Bob opened the door to kindergarten for Virginia, and Virginia opened the door to Christ for him”. Bob was the pastor of churches in Kansas and then served parishes in Nebraska, which included Claytonia/Wilber, Loup Parish, Lone Tree Parish, and Bloomfield-Verdigre-Crofton. He retired in June of 1986, however Bob was asked to return to pastoral duty in 1990 due to a shortage of pastors. Bob served until pastors were available to be installed in Ewing/Page, Spencer, Bassett/Newport/Rose, Osmond, Stark Valley, Oakland/Lyons, and the Clarks-Pierce Chapel.

In July of 1999, Bob decided to not to take any further appointments or installments. Bob was a World War II Veteran, serving in the European Theatre with the 80th Infantry, and later with the Adjutant General Printing Division. Before volunteering for the Army, Bob and Virginia owned and operated their own print shop. Upon returning home from the service, Bob took advantage of the G.I. Bill and received his dairying certificate from Kansas State. Upon receiving his education, Bob became the superintendent of the ice cream production department at the Lawrence Sanitary Creamery. While working there and being an active member of his church and serving as president of the Centenary United Methodist Men, Bob felt called by God to go into the ordained ministry. Bob left his position with the creamery and started his own home improvement company so he could work around his schooling in Dallas, Texas, at the Southern Methodist School of Theology, where he received his degree in Theology. Bob was a member of the Nebraska Annual Conference of United Methodist Pastors. He was the Northern District Representative of the Association of Retired United Methodist Ministers and Spouses. Bob held various offices on the District Council and on the conference board of directors during the 1980’s farm crisis. Always an active person, Bob had hobbies of camping, fishing, hunting, and horseshoe pitching. He was president of the Eastern Nebraska Horseshoe Association for six years. During his lifetime, Bob won six state and two world-class horseshoe championships. Bob was also a member of the American Legion and the VFW, as well as the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association Hall of Fame. Bob and Virginia loved children, and beside their own, the couple had 15 foster children. Bob also held pastoral credentials with the Presbyterian Church after his retirement. Bob received awards from the Salvation Army, as well as the Aksarben “Good Neighbor” citation. He was also a member of The Great Navy of Nebraska.

Bob died Thursday, September 19, 2014, at the Norfolk Veterans Home in Norfolk, Nebraska, attaining the age of 94 years, one month, and 19 days. Bob was a man of many talents, skills, and accomplishments. He was proud of the fact that he read over 200 books a year, had earned 129 trophies for his horseshoe pitching, and was a stickler for detail. Many people that knew Bob knew of his “black book of knowledge”. It was this black book that Bob used to log everything and anything that affected his life. Daily he would record rainfall, what went on that day, activities of the day, people he saw, how much something cost that he purchased, what his weight was, and anything Bob felt was important to him. This dedication to accuracy and detail is what defined Bob as a man of integrity. His devotion to paying attention to the world around him was just one facet of the care he had for everyone he knew, and especially his family, friends, and parishioners.

Bob is survived by his family, which includes his children: Kenny (wife Annie) Hopkins of Lawrence, Kansas, Larry (wife Jackie) Hopkins of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Herman (wife Debra) Kaemmerling of Lincoln, Nebraska, Alice (husband Mark) Buschkamp of Bloomfield, Nebraska, and Billy (wife Joyce) Kaemmerling of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; brother, Donnie (wife Margie) Hopkins of Lawrence, Kansas; as well as countless former parishioners and numerous friends and lives that Bob touched as he ministered to and cared for God’s people. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Marie Hopkins; son, Robert W. Hopkins; parents, Nellie and Alex Hopkins; and sister, Margret Hopkins.

May 28, 1925 - Janurary 18, 2020

Sally Anna (Jones) Grooms was born May 28, 1925 in Anisworth,Nebraska to Wilmer M. and Viola M. (Webb) Jones. Sally passed away Janurary 18, 2020 at Rock Bounty Long Term Care Center in Bassett, Nebraska at the age of 94 years, 7 months and 21 days.

Sally was raised in the Norden.Nebraska area attending several country schools and graduating from Keya Paha County High School in Springview, Nebraska in 1943. Sally greatly valued her education, knowing she wanted to be a teacher from a very early age; setting up "school" in her Grandparents yard teaching reading and sums to her dolls, teddy bear and dog Ring under the shade trees.

"Home" for her was at her Grandparents on their homestead south and west of Norden in the canyons. In grade school, she boarded in Norden where her Granddad would drive the team and wagon in to pick her up on Fridays and then take her back on Sunday evenings. She loved running to the window at Mrs. Petzels where she boarded, to watch "that boy riding fast and wild out of town on his big black horse" after school. " That Boy" later became our Dad.

During high School in Springview, her granddad followed the same routine of dropping her off and picking her up only then it was with the Model T, weather permitting. During these years her Mother and Step-Father worked in Wichia, Kansas at the Boeing Airplane Factory so her grandparents had a very influential role in her life always, but especially during this time.

Upon graduation fro High School, with a Normal Training Certificate which was good for three years, she taught the following school term in a country school Northwest of Springview and continued to teach at other country schools in Keya Paha County for a total of fourteen years.

On May 28th, 1944  she was married to Howard Russell Grooms and continued to live in the Norden area where Dad ranched and Mom taught school. They had 55 years happy years and 8 months together until his passing in Janurary of 2000. To this union was born a son, who died in infancy, and four daughters who she greatly adored: Rhonda (Ed) Kohel, Laurene (Gary) Muger and twin girls Tammy (Jeff) Spies and Pam Petersen. In 1963 they adopted a son Charles.

Sally was a wonderful teacher, a Loving rancher's wife, a devoted mother, Grandmothera and Great-grandmother. She enjoyed reading, going for walks on county roads, camping and traveling but what she treasured more than anything else was time spent with her beloved family. Sally and Russell began pitching horseshoes in 1977, traveling throughout Nebraska, the United States and Canada to many tournaments, meeting people from all over the world who became lifelong friends.

Ellis E. "Al " Hodge was born December 15 1939, to Ada Mae (Williamson) and Clyde Thomas Hodge. He passed away March 16, 2020 at the age of 80.

Al lived in Arkansas a year before moving to Genesee County, Michigan. There, his birth certificate was finally applied for. He was raised in Grand Blanc and Burton Michigan.

The second of Ada and Clyde's three children, Al had an older sister Jody and younger brother Thomas. When he was nine years old, his mother, Ada Mae, married Glenn Edwin Smith, who had three daughters-Norma, Marilyn and Glendall- and a son Dale. to this union, two more children, Pam and Ron Smith, were born.

Al attended Grand Blanc School, and participated in Golden Gloves boxing in high school, of which he was very proud.

At the age on 15, He left home and traveled extensively throughout the country doing freelance work. He worked in almost every state in the U.S. and loved telling stories of some of his more exciting experiences. Some of these stories included working at General Motors, being a bodyguard for a wealthy man, helping on the Alaskan Pipeline, being in a Crest Toothpaste T.V. commercial in Los Angeles, doing steelwork on skyscrapers in New York City, playing a short role as a hanged man in a western movie, and working as a hired man on several dude ranches and also at a few large ranches in Colorado and Wyoming, as well as much more.

Al met Cheryl Louise Poore in Cheyenne, Wyoming, while bull riding at a rodeo. He had 3 broken ribs, but still danced with her all night, even though she kept squeezing his sides. He married her September 27, 1973, and had a son named Glen in 1975. In "76" they moved to Cheryl's family ranch in southern Brown County, Nebr. to help her parents. Some of his favorite memories were made in over 45 years of deer hunting. He enjoyed taking his kids, neighbor kids, grandkids, and friends chasing trophy deer through the Sandhills. He didn't always come back with the 'big bucks' , but he always had fun sharing his knowledge.

Al was especially involved in his local commumity, despite living 30 miles away in the country. He cherished his years as a 4-H shooting instructor. Al was also a proud supporter of all the local bake sales and was always the first to volunteer to chaperone his children's country school trips. He was also very proud of his Louis L Amour book collection, always the first at any rummage sale or auction advertising them. He will be fondly remembered amd missed by all.

John Eugene (Jack) McKinney
August 17 1928 - January 5 2022

John Eugene (Jack) McKinney passed away at home on January 5, 2022. His last day included wisits with all four of his children and two bowls of his favorite chocolate-vanilla twist, soft serve ice cream. Born in Lincoln Ne, August 17 1928, to Ora Earl and Manie Rose (Kitchen) McKinney, Jack was the fourth and youngest child in the family. He lost his oldest brother, lawrence, in 1932 and his mother in 1933, three months before his fifth birthday. Jack, his brother Art and sister Betty lived with their maternal Grandmother, Lillian Garrison, for several years before their father remarried.

From an early age, Jack worked hard to support himself. he started shingling roofs for 25 cents/hour at the of 14 and left high school early, telling his teachers that if he didn't work, he didn't eat. At the age of 28 he started his own business, Mckinney Construction. Over the next 20 years he became a well known and respected business man, completing multiple projects for organizations like the Nebraska National Guard, Peru

State Teachers College and Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph. His most iconic project is the massive, green microwave tower in downtown Lincoln which, next to the State Capital, is the most distinctive feature of the Lincoln skyline. In 1978 he purchased Havelock Refuse and for the next decades delighted thechildren along his route with garage trucks featuring Oscar the Grounch painted on the side.

His business partner throughout all those years was his wife , Jean (Folkerts) McKinney. Jack ran the operations and Jean kept the books, while raising four children. Even after divorcing in 1976. the two continued to work togetherand maintained almost daily communication until Jean death in 2016. While Jack worked hard all his life, he also played hard. Jack burst onto the Lincoln sports scene in January 1948, at the age of 19, when he won the City's Men's Scratch bowling title. His name became a regular feature in the paper over the next 25 years as ha and his teammates took home title after title on the local and state level. When a bad back forced him to put down the bowling ball, he picked up a pair of horseshoes. He transferred his smooth bowling release to his new sport and enjoyed many years of competitive and recreational pitching. His love for the sport prompted him to install six regulation courts on his property at 510 Washington and tp build a new structure to house two indoor , all weather courts. Throwers from around the country traveled to Lincoln to pitch in the annual Old Style Invitational Tournament that Jack Hosted at his facility. In addition to sports, jack love music especially big band, jazz, and the Blues. His favorite artist was Frank Sinatra, evidenced by his distinctive ringtone of Frank singing "Summer Winds".

Though it all Jack made lifelong friends. His tough and demanding exterior protected an incredibly generous and caring heart. A savvy investor and avid collector, he was driven to leave a legacy for his children, while at the same time helping anyone who came to him in need.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents Ora and Manie, his brothers Lawrence and Arthur. sister Betty Rush, his wife of 20 years, Jean McKinney, his companion in later years Carol Gray, and more stray cats that he loved and cared for than we can count

He is survived by his son, John (Melanie) McKinney of Rising City, daughter, Jan (Ralph) Lewis of Overland Park Ks. and daughters Julie Cater and Joy McKinney of Lincoln. He leaves behind 14 great children and one great granddaughter.

The family woulkd like to express their gratitude to staff and residents at the Knolls Senior Living Communtiy for enbracing Dad and accompanying him during these last few months of his life.
